Getting started

Do I need an account?

You can open a list without an account if its owner made the link public. You need an account to make, edit, search and share lists.

What is a username for?

Your username is your profile address. It's set when you sign up and can't be changed later.

How do I make a list?

On My lists, press Start a new list at the bottom of the screen. Type a name and press Create. If you don't have any lists yet, press Create your first list.

Lists and items

What can go in a list?

Anything with a name. Books, restaurants, films, records, groceries, tasks, people, ideas, links. Each item can also have a note, a photo and a link.

How do I add items?

Open a list and type in the box at the bottom. Hotlist suggests matching books, films, music and more as you type. Paste a link and it fills in the title and picture for you. Press the photo button to add a picture.

Can I add a lot of items at once?

Yes. Paste a block of text into the add box and each line becomes an item. You get a chance to check them before you press Add.

What does an item's page show?

Tap an item to open it. You can change its name, note, link and picture there, and changes save as you type. It also shows how many other lists have the same thing.

How do tags work?

Hotlist tags your lists for you based on what's in them. To add your own, press Add tags next to the list's title. Search picks up tags too.

How do checklists work?

Turn on Checklist under the list's title. Tap a row to tick it off and tap again to undo. On a phone you can also swipe it to the right. The arrow on the right opens the item. When you're done, press the trash button at the bottom to clear the finished items.

How do I delete an item?

Open the item and press Delete item. On a phone you can also swipe it to the left. On a computer, hover over it and press the trash icon.

Can I reorder items or move them to another list?

Press and hold an item, then drag it where you want it. On a computer, you can drag it onto another list in the side panel to move it there.

Can I see items as tiles instead of rows?

Yes. Press the view button in the top bar to switch between rows and cards. On your own lists the choice is saved with the list.

How do I change a list's cover?

Tap the cover next to the list's title. Pick an icon, a colour or one of your item photos, or upload your own.

What is Tracking?

Tracking keeps the lists you use every day, like a shopping list, at the top of My lists and the side panel. Choose Pin from a list's menu or drag the list up into the Tracking section.

How do I rename or delete a list?

Open the menu on the list's card and choose Rename or Delete. You can also press and hold a list's title to rename it. Deleting removes the list and all its items, and it can't be undone. Only the list's owner can do either.

How do I find something?

Press Explore in the top bar, or press / on a keyboard, and start typing. It searches your lists, items and tags, and shows matching books, films and music you can save to a list.

Does Hotlist work offline?

You can keep adding items without a connection. They show as Waiting to send and go through once you're back online. Making a new list, adding photos and other changes need a connection.

Sharing

Who can see my lists?

Your lists are private until you share them. Only you and the people you add can open them.

How do I share a list?

Open the list and press Share under its title. Type someone's email and press Invite. Hotlist doesn't email them, so copy the link and send it yourself. They join when they open it signed in with that email.

What can the people I add do?

Each person is an Editor, who can add and change items, or a Viewer, who can only read the list. Change it from the button next to their name. Only you can rename, share or delete the list.

Can I take someone off a list?

Yes. Choose Remove from list from the button next to their name. Invites nobody has accepted yet show as Pending and can be cancelled.

Can I leave a list someone shared with me?

Yes. Open the list and choose Leave this list.

Can I share a link instead?

Yes. The share window has one link for the list. Set it to Private so only people on the list can open it, or Public so anyone with the link can view it. Press Copy link to copy it.

Can I use Hotlist with Claude?

Yes. Connect the Hotlist MCP Connector and Claude can make lists and add to them for you. Here's how to set it up.

Account and data

Where are my settings?

Press your initial in the top right. That menu has Account settings, dark or light mode, and Sign out.

How do I edit my profile?

In Account settings, change your display name and About me, then press Save profile.

How do I change my password?

In Account settings, press Reset password. We'll email you a link to set a new one.

How do I change my email?

In Account settings, press Change email. The change takes effect when you follow the link sent to the new address.

How do I delete my account?

In Account settings, press Delete account and type your username to confirm. If you get stuck, email hi@hotlist.world.
