Welcome!
How can we help?
Getting started
Do I need an account?
You do not need an account to read public lists. You do need an account to create, manage, and edit your own lists.
What is a username for?
Your username is a profile address that is shared on your public lists. You can choose it when you sign up.
How do I make a list?
Hit New list in the top bar, or the round button in the corner on a phone. Give it a title and start adding items.
Lists and items
What can go in a list?
Anything with a name. Books, restaurants, films, records, tasks, people, ideas, links. Each item can also carry a note, a picture and its own tags.
How do tags work?
Type a tag on a list or on an item and it becomes a filter chip on any page showing it. Tags are not a fixed taxonomy and nothing needs to be tagged at all.
Can I reorder items?
You can drag items by clicking and holding on them when viewing a list you are an editor for.
Can I reorder my lists?
The same way: on My lists, click and hold a list card and drag it where you want it. Pinned lists stay at the front, so dragging a list below them unpins it and dragging one up there pins it.
What happens when I tap an item?
It opens on its own page, with the picture full size and everything you saved about it. Edit changes it, and your browser's Back button returns you to the list.
Sharing
Who can see my lists?
Lists are private. To let somebody else in, invite them to the list by email or phone number — see sharing, below.
How do I share a list with someone?
Open the list, press the share arrow next to its title, and enter their email address or phone number. You get a link back to send them. It works once, for whoever signs up with it, and only for that list.
What can the person I invited do?
They can add, edit, reorder and delete items. The list's name, tags, and who else is on it stay with you, and only you can delete it. The list appears on their home screen alongside their own.
Can I take someone off a list?
Yes. The share dialog lists everyone on it, with a Remove next to each. An invitation nobody has accepted yet can be cancelled the same way, and the link dies immediately.
Someone saved my list. What did they get?
Saving a list creates a copy for that user. Their edits do not touch yours and your later edits do not reach them.
Account and data
How do I change my password?
Go to account settings, under the menu in the top right. If you signed up with Google there is no password to change.
How do I delete my account?
Email hi@hotlist.world from the address on the account and we will process your deletion request.
